That’s an excellent and very important question for T&T drivers! While a standard ‘Comprehensive’ policy often does not include it, we always advise on adding a ‘Special Perils’ rider, which provides crucial coverage for flood damage, riot, and strike. We can definitely help you ensure you’re properly protected for our local conditions.

A Rainy Season Wake-Up Call for Maria in Chaguanas

Maria thought her ‘fully comprehensive’ car insurance had her covered for anything. But during a heavy downpour last season, she got stuck in a flash flood that damaged her engine. She was shocked to learn her policy did not cover flood damage—an expensive lesson. After coming to TrueHaven, we ensured her new policy included the crucial ‘Special Perils’ rider. Now, she drives with true peace of mind, knowing she’s protected from the real risks on Trinidad’s roads.

Motor Insurance Questions

What is motor insurance and why is it mandatory?

Motor insurance protects you against financial loss from accidents, fire, theft, or natural perils and covers liability to third parties for bodily injury or property damage. In Trinidad and Tobago, Third-Party Only insurance is the minimum legal requirement for any vehicle driven on public roads.

• Third-Party Only covers liability for injury or property damage to others with no cover for your vehicle.

• Third-Party Fire & Theft adds protection against fire damage and theft of your vehicle.

• Comprehensive offers the broadest cover, combining liability, fire, theft, and collision benefits, plus optional extras.

An Excess is the fixed amount you pay out-of-pocket on a claim before the insurance company pays the rest. For example, if your excess is $2,500 TT and the repair cost is $10,000 TT, you would pay the first $2,500 and the insurer would pay the remaining $7,500. This rider saves you from paying that excess.

Always report the accident to the police within 48 hours. Notify your insurer as soon as possible and complete a claim form detailing the incident. Provide supporting bills , estimate of repairs, and receipts including the police receipt . An adjuster will assigned to assess the damage, negotiate any third-party settlements, and arrange payment once the claim is approved. Click Here

Anil's Costly Miscalculation After a Kitchen Fire

Anil insured his home for the value he paid for it ten years ago. But after a small kitchen fire, he was shocked to discover that the cost to rebuild and replace everything had nearly doubled. His old policy left him underinsured and facing huge out-of-pocket expenses. We worked with him to get a proper, up-to-date property valuation, ensuring his new policy covers the true replacement cost, not just the market value.

Property Insurance Questions

What is property insurance?

Property insurance provides financial protection for private homes, businesses, and their contents against perils such as fire, flood, burst pipes, and certain weather events. It covers rebuilding costs, replacing contents.

The sum insured should reflect the full replacement cost of your building and contents. A professional valuation helps ensure you’re neither underinsured (which risks shortfalls in a claim) nor overinsured (which needlessly increases premiums)

First, ensure everyone’s safety and, where possible, mitigate further damage (e.g., board up broken windows). Then notify your insurer within the policy’s reporting period, document the loss with photos or videos, gather receipts for emergency repairs, and complete the claim forms as instructed.

Samantha's Plan for a Future She Won't See

As a young mother, Samantha’s biggest fear was what would happen to her children if she were no longer around. How would the mortgage be paid? What about their education? We helped her set up a simple term life insurance policy—an affordable plan that provides a significant, tax-free lump sum to her family. It’s not about planning for death; it’s about guaranteeing a future for the ones you love.

Life and Retirement Questions

Why should I buy life insurance?

Life insurance guarantees a lump-sum payout to your beneficiaries upon death, providing immediate financial protection for dependents. It can cover debts, fund education, or preserve your family’s standard of living when you’re no longer able to earn.

Common options include term life (coverage for a set period), whole or permanent life (lifetime coverage with cash value accumulation), mortgage protection term insurance (decreasing face amount to match mortgage balance), and endowment plans (savings plus protection).

A general guideline is 6 to 8 times your annual income, but you should factor in existing assets, other income sources, family size, education goals, and debt obligations to arrive at a precise coverage amount. See our article about calculating the amount of life insurance you need. there are several methods but I find the DIME method is an excellent to start.

The NIBTT Retirement Benefit supplements income for contributors aged 60–65 who retire and for those aged 65 regardless of retirement status. A basic pension is payable to those with at least 750 contributions, while a Retirement Grant is a lump sum for those with fewer than 750 contributions. Retirement Benefit

You must reach the qualifying age (60–65), cease insurable employment if under 65, and have at least 750 contributions for a pension. Complete forms NI 82 (Retirement Benefit Application) and NI 65 (Life Certificate), and submit supporting documents such as birth certificate and valid photo ID. Retirement Benefit
